Kitchen Table ActivismBackground: Kitchen Table Activism (KTA) is a monthly project of the Rural Organizing Project. Often building on quarterly themes, short actions are described in each KTA. The theory is that basic steps and tasks can lead to powerful collective results as small groups of people gather to complete the same action throughout the state of Oregon. ROP works to keep the basic tasks easily achievable so that groups with other projects or groups with limited immediate energy can still manage to complete the KTA each month. Back to KTA

June 1, 2006 Dear ROP members, Back in December, five ROP youth had the opportunity to meet with ROP leadership in Portland to pull together a "Pod" as a part of the Intergenerational Dialogues hosted by the Advocacy Institute. From this conference, the ROP Youth Pod had the opportunity to attend ROP's Think Tank with Eric Ward, participate in Living Room Conversations on immigration, network and dialogue at the ROP Caucus, and meet back for the concluding Intergenerational Dialogue. The icebreaker of this second Dialogue was to create a poster representing what each Pod had completed since December. The ROP Pod drew out a map of Oregon and drew houses to represent every single Living Room Conversation ROP and youth coordinated since December. Twenty-seven houses later and a mansion for the Caucus, we placed our poster up on the wall. Later in the Dialogue we discussed what we had done individually in our communities and it became clear just how much ROP helped each one of us. Why aren't other youth taking advantage of ROP's services and support? Hey, wait! Where ARE the youth? We decided that our next goal is to be able to draw out a map of Oregon and be able to put stars on towns where we know there are youth making a difference in their rural communities. Oregon needs a network of rural activist youth and we need YOUR help! Are there emerging leaders in your town? Are there students struggling to stay active in your local schools? This is where YOU can help shape the future of youth organizations in your rural communities. Email cara@rop.org their information and we will begin contacting them to see if they're interested in joining our network! Sincerely, Jess Campbell & Aaron Opela On behalf to the ROP Youth Pod
