December 2003 Activity
Holiday Greetings With A Personal Message
Why This Activity?
At holiday time, many of us send out messages of hope and cheer to friends and family. Why not include a simple suggestion for cultivating hope right here at home? In the new year, Oregonians will be faced with a decision to support schools and services to seniors by approving the balanced budget plan, or to reject the plan and face more cuts and uncertainty. A gentle word from you can shed light on this important subject. Therefore, the December 2003 KTA is to include a short message with your annual holiday greeting.
What Is This Activity?
Gather supporters to send out your holiday greetings with a prepared message that can be slipped into the cards. This can be a festive way to celebrate the yearıs activities. For example, one ROP group is having a ³cookie swap.² Ask members bring their own greeting cards and address books for a party to address the cards and slip in a message from your group.
Steps To Complete The Activity
- Decide whether your group wants to do this activity;
- Choose a cozy place to gather where people will have room to write the cards.
- Spread the word. Send out a reminder and/or make phone calls ahead of time explaining the activity and asking members to bring their cards and address books, and if you like, treats to share. You might invite participants to bring extra cards to trade or make available to others if they like. Supporters who donıt like meetings might love to be invited to join in the fun- so try and invite the broadest pool of potential supporters!
- Print up copies of the messages ahead of time, and cut them so participants can easily insert them into their cards. See sample messages below, or create your own. The message should be short, while clearly describing the issue and the specific action you want people to take.
- Consider offering easy refreshments - this is supposed to be fun.
- Events like this are meant to be social. Leave time for socializing, but when most participants have arrived, have someone welcome everyone, explain the activity and hand out messages.
- Let the ROP know how it goes.

“This February 3rd, Oregonians will be asked to vote on referendum No. 30 on whether to support or reject the bi-partisan plan (HB 2152) to balance the state budget. The plan supports programs like Oregon Project Independence that makes it possible for seniors and people with disabilities to stay in their homes with care givers. As a member of (insert the name of your Local Human Dignity Group here), I urge you to give the gift of health this season by voting yes to support a fair, balanced budget plan for Oregon.”“This February 3rd, Oregonians will be asked to vote on referendum #30 on whether to support or reject the bi-partisan plan (HB 2152) to balance the state budget. Without the plan, schools will lose $400 million. As a member of (insert the name of your Local Human Dignity Group here), I urge you to give the gift of education. Vote yes on February 3rd to support a fair, balanced budget plan for Oregon.”
